Digital retinography in Marbella

The retinography is a high-resolution fundus photograph that allows for the assessment of the retina, the macula, the optic nerve and blood vessels. It is a quick, painless and essential test for detecting disorders that do not yet produce symptoms, especially in patients with diabetes, myopia magna, hypertension or history of eye disease.

At the clinic in Ali Nowrouzi we use advanced digital retinography to:

  • Document the fundus status and compare its evolution over time.

  • Detect early lesions such as microhaemorrhages, exudates, neovascularisation or changes in the macula.

  • Evaluate the optic nerve in suspected cases of glaucoma.

  • Complement more comprehensive studies such as the OCT and the visual campimetry.

It takes only a few seconds and usually does not require dilation.

Frequently asked questions about Digital Retinography

What exactly does a fundus photograph show?

It provides a detailed image of the fundus, where we can assess the macula, retinal vessels, optic nerve and peripheral retina.
It can detect vascular, inflammatory and degenerative disorders even before they affect vision.

It is especially useful in patients with:

  • Diabetes, to detect and monitor diabetic retinopathy.

  • Myopia magna, where there is an increased risk of peripheral lesions and myopic macular degeneration.

  • Glaucoma or suspected glaucoma, as an adjunct to OCT and campimetry.

  • Arterial hypertension or vascular diseases.

  • Routine retinal screening from a certain age.

No.

  • The retinography is a colour photography of the fundus.

  • The OCT is a in-depth scan of the inner layers of the retina and optic nerve.

The two tests complement each other:
if we want to evaluate the macula accurately, it is always recommended to also perform a OCT.

In many cases it is not necessary to dilate.
If the pupil is small, cataracts are present or we need to see the peripheral retina in greater detail, dilation can be applied to obtain wider images.

No. It is completely painless and safe.
It may produce a slight flash of light when capturing the image, but it disappears within seconds and does not affect vision.

Dr. Nowrouzi analyses the images instantly.
If any alteration is detected, a request may be made for a OCT, a more thorough examination or tests such as the campimetry as the case may be.

Yes. Regular retinography helps to:

  • Compare changes in the fundus over the years.

  • Detect vascular and macular disorders before they affect vision.

  • Prevent complications in patients with diabetes or high myopia.
